How to Sow Your Ice Plant Seeds Succesfully?
Ice plant seeds are to be sowed differently from other leavy vegetable seeds e.g Cai Xin
These are the conditions need to ensure higher successful germination of ice plant
Use a sandy medium (use our light weight succulent mix)
Do not bury the seeds
Need to have light (no direct sun though)
Sprinkle the ice plant seeds onto the sandy or gravel mix. Gently tamp the seeds down into the sandy / gravel mix but are not covered below any soil. Light must reach the seeds or they will not germinate.
Water the newly planted seeds by gently misting them with a spray bottle or by placing the seed tray in a shallow pan of water for about 15 minutes. Continue watering the seeds as needed until they germinate, providing only enough water to keep the seeds moist but never wet or soggy.
Place the seeds indoors where they are exposed to plenty of light and temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius.
As the seedlings of ice plant are very delicate, transplanting them may easily damage them. Hence, sow directly into individual pots are advised.
Use Greenhous method for germination and growing stage to increase the chance of success.
Harden off the seedlings before transplanting them into the garden by placing them outside for several hours a day. Gradually increase the number of hours the plants spend outside each day over a period of 10 to 14 days to acclimate them to outdoor conditions.
